"In loving memory
of our brother, James Goss."
1940 - 1980
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
For almost three decades, James, Roni, and Lari Goss, from Cartersville, Georgia, forged new ground in Southern Gospel music with a rich blend of 'family' harmony, new and innovative arrangements, and original compositions. In the industry, their music was heralded as "creative" and "compelling," and "years ahead of its time."
These songs, recorded more than a quarter century ago, are just as fresh, just as timely, as if they were recorded yesterday. Faithfully and loving 'lifted' from original phonograph records and re-mastered using the latest digital technology, this two volume set features the 'best of the best' from 12 different recording projects, spanning a period from 1963 (when the boys were teenagers) until 1979. They are included on these CDs in chronological order.
In 1980, oldest brother, James, was tragically killed in an airplane accident. At the time of his death, the brothers were in the studio working on their latest project. Thanks to Elmer Cole, who was producing this record, three of those songs were saved and are included in this collection. For the first time you will hear the Goss Brothers' rendition of Lari's signature song, "Cornerstone." Roni's gripping vocal presentation of "Long and Winding Road" will move you. Finally, enjoy James' smooth and upbeat version of "Anyone Can Move A Mountain," his last recorded performance.
For Goss Brothers music buffs (and there are still many) this is for you. For those who may have never heard the Goss Brothers sing, but have enjoyed the creative genius of Lari Goss over the years, you are in for a treat. Listening to these selections, you quickly recognize why Lari's unique musical 'gift' transcends time and flawlessly bridges the many styles that make up the gospel music genre.

"A little blonde-haired green-eyed eleven-year-old Alabama boy, who knew three chords (C, F and G) on the piano, would sit for hours and listen to his aunt's "Goss Bros." records. There was something distinctive to his young ear about their style, especially the piano player. He started saving his money for any record that bore the name, "Lari Goss". After years of lifting the phonograph needle, running to the piano, and trying to match chords, the boy grew to become a decent piano player, arranger and music director, and he had the good Lord and Lari Goss to thank for it.
That was 40 years ago. I was that little boy and you know what? To this day my musicians heart skips a beat when I see the name, 'Lari Goss.' I did and still do think he is God's gift to music. Lari, thank you for being there for; for your inspiration and insight. But most of all for being real to me as a friend."

"I could write for pages concerning my appreciation of the music of Lari Goss. Sorry I never took this opportunity before. I first saw your name on a McDuff brothers album around 1969 (?) and fell in love with your arranging style. I was the Minister of Music then at Patterson Park Grace Brethren Church in Dayton, Ohio. Later, I invited your trio, The Goss Brothers, to the church. It was a great concert although we were poorly prepared (it was my first "concert promotion").
I have accumulated over 8,000 record albums in my collection, plus a huge assortment of cassettes and CDs. But, I have ALWAYS considered Lari Goss to be the finest arranger IN THE WORLD. And I am so glad to hear that you are still making public appearances in addition to doing those great productions for the Talleys, Hoppers, etc., etc. One of my favorite all time albums is still the Gaither Trio (with Michael English) doing Hymns. I probably bought and gave away 2 dozen copies of that one. But my present top favorite is the Talley's Praise album. I just ordered the soundtrack to it, and that is what made me think to see if you had a website. God bless you and keep up that incredible work."

"Love your music and arranging. The Goss Bros. were my heroes in gospel music. Those songs still are great and the arrangements sound up-to-date. Thanks for your contibution to Christian music."

"Saw you and your brothers in 1960 in the Canton, Ga auditorium sponsored by the Mellowtones along with the Oak Ridge Qt. Bought several records. I have been a huge fan. I was saddened by the loss of James. Organized a young group of boys in 1964 in Macon called the Gospel Boys. Used several of your songs How Green Is Your Valley, Close To The Master, Prepare To Meet Thy God. I just purchased your new release, Remembering the Goss Brothers. Thanks for doing it. Im thrilled to know you have prepared these CD's honoring the group before your brother's untimely death. God bless and keep you."

"I remember the distinctive "Goss" sound from the earliest days of the 60's when I loved and owned two of their LP albums. There was one I looked for but never found which contained a song with the words, 'Soft is the voice I hear, falling on my ears, Jesus calling...' (if I remember them right). My buddy owned that album, I only got to hear it when I was in his room...and he didn't loan his albums out.
I have heard enough "Goss" to almost always pick out their voices doing background awhile from way back, on through hearing something and saying that sounds like a "Goss" arrangement. I love it! So thankful God has given you talents, and that you have used them to enhance the music of His Kingdom."

Recently, I received a signed 'Remembering' CD from you via Allison Scott. I am so grateful to you for it. I remember quite fondly the Goss Brothers from the mid-sixties. The Goss Brothers became my favorite group back then when I realized that there were some cutting edge harmonies with the three of you that I didn't hear from other groups. A friend of mine, Virgil Lovett, and I often remember the days and the music of the Goss Brothers. I believe he and the Lovett Brothers Quartet sang on the same programs with the three of you on occassion. Anyway, thanks. The CD is a treasure. I join you in "Remembering."

I love the CD "Remembering the Goss Brothers". I have the record album "Walk With God" and for years wanted to have your other recordings. Will there be another "Remembering" CD in the future? There is a song the brothers recorded called "In Heaven" which is one of my favorites. If another CD is made I hope this will be on it. Thanks for making the Goss music available once again and may God continue to bless your ministry.

From the moment I discovered their music about 17 years ago, I have been a huge fan of the Goss Brothers. Their music was WAY before their time. I don't think Gospel Music will ever fathom the tremendous musical contributions these three gentlemen made to this industry. Featuring tunes from 1963-1979, this is a wonderful collection of songs highlighting the musical career of the Goss Brothers.
The recording starts with one of my all time favorite songs, "SHOUT BROTHER, SHOUT" (no one has been able to top the Goss Brothers rendition of this song) and moves to another favorite of mine "HE'S LIVING IN MY HEART". We are weaved through ageless Goss Brother classics and highly favored tunes like "HOW GREEN IS YOUR VALLEY", "LEADING TO CALVARY", "DIDN'T IT RAIN", "SWING LOW, SWEET CHARIOT", "HE HAS THE ANSWER, "CLOSE TO THE MASTER", "AFTER ALL", "LET THE LOWER LIGHTS BE BURNING", "IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND", "SOMETIMES IT SEEMS", "I GAVE MY HEART TO HIM", "HE'S SO GOOD TO ME" and a host of other tunes; totaling 33 songs in all.
The highlight of the recording though, is the inclusion of three never before released songs from the group from 1979, before James Goss was tragically killed in an airplane accident in 1980. Those songs, "CORNERSTONE", "LONG AND WINDING ROAD" and "ANYONE CAN MOVE A MOUNTAIN" are true testaments of their talent as singers and musicians.
Everyone could learn a thing or two by listening to the Goss Brothers. Great harmony, precision singing and innovative arrangements are what you find in each and every song. Technically, there were none no better than the Goss Brothers. This is ear candy at its best!
